Biography:

Marie Rose Aucoin: born January 28, 1910 & died March 23, 1973 (age 63) I'm Georgina Aucoin and am writing what I remember about Marie Rose (my aunt), as well as what my siblings remember. Marie Rose has lived with us (in Irenee's house, later given to his son Jeffrey) for her entire lifetime. This means I've known Marie Rose for 25 years (i.e. the first 16 years of my life when I lived at home and the following 9 years when I lived away from home but visited regularly for vacations). Marie Rose was only 11 years old when her father Georges died. She had 3 other siblings (Joseph {born in 1911}, Marcellin (my father) {born in 1913} & Dominique {born in 1915}). Her uncle Jeffrey looked after them all, after my grandfather's death, alone at first and then with his wife after 1925. When I was born in 1948, his wife was not living. Marie Rose and Dominique were mentally challenged. When Jeffrey died in 1955, dad took over the task of looking after Marie Rose and Dominique. By this time, dad was married and my mother with living with him in Jeffrey's house. Things we remember about Marie Rose include the following: • Marie Rose never had a full-time job. She did odd jobs, like cleaning at the liquor store and babysitting the kids next door (at Catherine & Phylias). Catherine only has good things to say about Marie Rose. • Marie Rose helped mom around the house and did everything she could for us. Claudette (my sister) remembers Marie Rose ironing her clothes and running a bath for her when she was in a hurry to go out. • Marie Rose never had much schooling. • In the later years, Marie Rose had a disability pension from the provincial government. I remember dad working with the family doctor to get her to qualify for that pension. Dad looked after that pension money until he died (3 months before Marie Rose). Then mom took over. • Marie Rose was kind and loved kids. In fact, she was upset when she went to Albert's house next door and the kids were being disciplined. • Marie Rose went out with men occasionally but only privately. I remember getting home from a school dance once and she was sitting on the couch with Eddie a Pade. Catherine told me that Marie Rose was going for drives every so often with Joseph a Nezime. It's only in the later years that we've discovered that she got pregnant when she visiting Marie Jane (her aunt) in Halifax. In fact, Charlie Dan Roach has documented, in his book, the birth of Marie Rose's son in 1942 and his early death about two years later. • Marie Rose shared a bedroom with Jeanne (my sister) and this worked out well. • Marie Rose was godmother to Claudette (my sister). • Marie Rose never got along with Dominique (her brother, who was also mentally challenged). As kids, we never understood why they never talked to each other in a nice way. In fact, dad could never trust them to be left alone. I remember babysitting them one summer for a week when mom and dad took a vacation. • Marie Rose was a religious person. She attended all the functions being performed in church. • Marie Rose died of cancer in 1973 (at age 63), after being sick for only a few months.
